Tom Levis Amazone Cayros XMS Plough

Tom Levis Amazone Cayros XMS

Tillage farmer Tom Levis from Manch Ballineen Co Cork specialises in growing cereal crops, fattening cattle and growing beet on contract for local dairy farmers in the area. Tom is ploughing over 400 acres a year with the Amazone Cayros XMS plough.

Tom explains “In West Cork our ground would be very heavy with lots of stones and rocks, we would usually be pulling the plough at full width at depths of 6-8 inches deep and the only time I might need to narrow the plough is when I  would be ploughing lay ground for reseeding

Hydraulic front furrow width adjustment

The furrow width of the first body can be adjusted as an option from inside the tractor cab using a double-acting hydraulic cylinder. This provides a high level of comfort, especially in hilly terrain, for strongly varying soils.

I bought the plough after I had a demo from Jim Power Agri. Sales and I really liked how the headstock is done on the Amazone plough, you could easily slide it across for the width of the front furrow where other brands you have to swing the whole plough to turn the sod up a hill, the Amazone is a way better setup that way, even ploughing up a hill you will have 5 even sods” explains Tom.

Comfortable turnover hydraulics

All headstocks on Cayros ploughs feature a turnover system that uses a double-acting cylinder with automatic changeover. This ensures that the plough turnover is smooth and jerk-free. All headstocks have slotted top link holes, so that the plough/tractor combination can contour in uneven ground.

The plough is easy to set, once you set it up its set for the year you don’t have to touch it and once you set the skimmers there is no trouble burying trash with a long board on the plough it turns the soil over perfect.

A feature I particularly like is the design of the wheel it’s built with a ram on it so when you are turning over the plough the wheel drops after the plough is fully turned over and that’s a way better job than other brands.

Tom Explains “The stone protection system works really well, I never have any issues with pulling up boulders it just trips away very freely and returns back into the ground

Hydraulic Stone Safety Protection

When triggered the plough body pushes in a piston in the accumulator via the hydraulic cylinder. The gas is compressed and automatically returns the body to its initial position after passing the obstacle.

The build quality of the plough is very impressive, the thickness is in the wearing parts and I am getting the acres out of them” explains Tom

Tom’s favourite features on the Cayros plough would be the build quality, the simple sliding headstock and also there is less bolts holding the parts together so it’s a much stronger set up.

I would happily recommend the Amazone plough, its good in stubble or lay ground to burry trash without having to constantly change the settings from field to field.

“It does exactly what it says its supposed to do, that’s what I like about it and with how costly fertiliser is you want to be 100% happy with your spread pattern and get the use out of your fertiliser.”

“In the really stony places we don’t plough, just give maybe two runs with the disc harrow and then in with this and it still covers the seed to perfection.”
