Don has been using the Amazone Cayena tine drill since the spring of 2022, “I choose the Cayena drill for a number of reasons, I like how the tine drill can operate in trashy conditions, I like how the drill give me lots of output when the conditions are right and last but not least the fantastic build quality of the Cayena and the other Amazone implements we run on the farm” explains Don.

With the Cayena 6001-C, AMAZONE offers a trailed tine seeder that can also place fertiliser together with the seed into the seed furrow. The 4,000 litre seed hopper is divided in two compartments at a ratio of 60:40 and equipped with two fully electric metering units. Both compartments can, be filled with either seed or fertiliser. Via the same conveying system, seed and fertiliser are placed together in the seed bed.

Don explains “We are operating a 250hp Deutz tractor on the drill at operating speeds up to 13kph with an average fuel consumption of 3l to the acre, but the drill requires a lot less horsepower to pull than that I would say 200-220hp would be more than capable of operating the Cayena in the autumn when conditions would be a little tougher”

Thanks to their extremely narrow profile, the hard metal armoured coulters of the Cayena easily penetrate into the ground, moving only a little soil material – minimising the loss of moisture during the sowing operation. The Cayena has a low pulling requirement and any coulter wear is kept to a minimum. In spite of the large 6 metre working width, tractors with a power rating from just 180HP are sufficient for the Cayena.

Don explains “Our previous drill was 4m with a wide coulter and I find the Cayena to be just as easy pull at a working width of 6m this is down to the simple tine coulter witch pulls up far less stones and any stones that are pulled up the matrix wheel packer is capable of pushing them back down saving the need to go around picking stones after sowing.”

The Amazone wedge ring roller with Matrix tyre profile, consisting of twelve 800 mm diameter tyres. The over-sized wedge ring roller ensures a highly-smooth travel and, at the same time, serves as integrated running gear for road transport. Thanks to its special profile design, the wedge ring roller consolidates the seed bed in strips, precisely and exactly above the seeds sown. In this way an optimum field emergence is achieved

“When drilling a crop into ground with a lot of chopped straw or cover crop residue the Cayena places the seed into clean soil all the time while leaving the trash on the surface so the earthworms can pull it down into the soil and I also like the wider spacings on the coulter this allows us to grow a more consistent crops, last autumn when soil conditions were less than ideal and also in spring when ground was very dry I was very impressed with excellent emergence I got after planting” explains Don

36 tine coulters and 16.6 cm row spacing – in three rows and arranged in an offset to one another on the main frame. The coulters of the Cayena, despite their narrow spacing, allow the easy passage of crop residues.

“Operating a min-till system requires less cultivation and this autumn our land got one run of a grubber and one pass of the drill, I find this is a very cost effective method of establishing a crop with a total of 8l per acre of diesel used.” explains Don.

Each ISOBUS-enabled machine from AMAZONE comes with the latest technology. It makes no difference whether you use an operator terminal from AMAZONE or an ISOBUS terminal fitted directly in the tractor. You only have to connect the machine to the respective ISOBUS terminal and the usual operator interface appears on the monitor in your tractor cab.

Don explains ”One of the highlights for me is the Cayena drill is ISOBUS ready simply just plug into my tractor and the controls, settings and auto steer are ready to go and I find these work 100% with no issues.”

Don concludes “I would recommend that anyone who is thinking of buying a new drill to try the Amazone Cayena in their own field, that’s what I did and was very impressed with the demonstration I got and we are very happy with how the Cayena has performed on our farm since making the change”

“In the really stony places we don’t plough, just give maybe two runs with the disc harrow and then in with this and it still covers the seed to perfection.”
